DESIGNERS 4 NECESSITY (2007-10-29)In 2003 three fond and talented young roman designers, Simone Bartolucci, Gabriel Beretta, and Valerio Ciampicacigli, founded PAULA. United since years from passion and common experiences such as urban writing, arts, publicity communication and pure handicraft, they chose, by establishing this new brand, to experience an alternative approach to design art, free from common patterns and far from usual attitudes, based on creative research as much as on the errors that always occur on work. Ever since PAULA’s main goal has been elaborating concepts and languages so far unexplored in design by creating vanguard objects, the guidelines of the group concentrate on the elaboration of what Paula has defined as the key question and knot to unleash : “what about design?”: a challenge, born from the refusal of a passive compliance to common attitudes, based on research as on creative errors, getting to formal and conceptual languages unexplored until today… but even no. Even though PAULA still keep itself in touch with the artistic italian and roman realities such as street art, writing, video art, photography etc. it is currently involved in a series of workshops and projects. On this regard the group considers an essencial part of its own work any kind of external advice in research that might be helpful to improve the alternative way of design which PAULA is devoted to. A non marginal part of work and study, for which Paula uses external advices, is research: from years projects on urban, technical or vanguard realities are in progress; the aim is to give life to objects and instruments of alternative knowledge based on our experiences and on those of who, like us, loves to get involved in the world. Il collettivo 'Paula' nasce nel 2002 dall'incontro di 3 giovani appassionati e talentuosi designer romani, Valerio Ciampicacigli, Gabriel Berretta e Simone Bartolucci_ uniti dalla passione e arricchiti da passate esperienze che spaziano dal writing urbano, all'arte, passando per la comunicazione pubblicitaria fino all'artigianato puro; i tre allora ventenni hanno deciso di unire le loro menti nello sforzo comune di produrre qualcosa di grande. Le linee di studio del gruppo si sono concentrate sull’elaborazione di quello che Paula ha definito come domanda chiave e nodo da scigliere nella professione del designer: “what about design?”: una sfida, nata dal rifiuto di una passiva conformazione alla consuetudine d’uso, fondata sulla ricerca come sull'errore creativo, approdando a linguaggi formali e contenutistici finora inesplorati..ma anche no. Paula si occupa principalmente della progettazione di oggetti d'avanguardia, ciò nonostante è vicinissima alle realtà artistiche del suo territorio (writing, street art, fotografia, video arte) , e sogna un design di commistioni globali-totali. Il gruppo paula è tutt'ora a lavoro su una serie di progetti di design che cercano di andare oltre la logica industriale, ispirati principalmente dai bisogni dettati dal quotidiano. Sono in piedi rapporti di lavoro con aziende terziste che operano in tutto il territorio nazionale e collaborazioni con studi di design giovani e titolati. Una parte non marginale del lavoro dello studio, e quella per la quale il gruppo paula si avvale di numerose consulenze esterne, è quella della ricerca: da anni oramai sono in cantiere progetti di studio su realtà urbane, tecniche o d'avanguardia; l'obiettivo è quello di dare vita a oggetti e/o strumenti di conoscenza alternativa sulla base delle esperienze nostre e di chi come noi ama assorbire il mondo.
